The Presidents nominee for Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Johanns, is a friend of illegal aliens and businesses that employ them. While Governor of Nebraska Johanns was an obstructionist to
Operation Vanguard, a large-scale sweep in 1998 and 1999 by the INS of meatpacking plants and the personnel they employ. The operation was a success, driving off many illegal aliens who were employed illegally by these companies. Johanns, who has accepted large contributions from these agriculture businesses, stepped in and put a halt to this crackdown and the enforcement of immigration law. This clearly states where his loyalties lie, with greed and money and not with enforcing the law.
FAIR
The president's choice for Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Johanns, while Governor of Nebraska, used the power of his office to protect large meatpacking and agricultural interests in his state who employ thousands of illegal aliens and violate countless other labor and occupational safety regulations.
...
"It is the job of the Secretary of Agriculture to be both a booster for and a watchdog over the U.S. agriculture industry," commented Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). "Gov. Johanns has demonstrated that when it comes to balancing these two competing interests, the scales are tipped heavily in favor of the agri-business industry's bottom line."
The U.S. agricultural industry has long been among the most egregious violators of U.S. immigration laws, and has had a shameful record of its treatment of workers. Over the past two decades, the meatpacking industry has used illegal alien labor to displace unionized American workers, while slashing wages and neglecting worker safety.
Shameful and disgraceful for a man who is going to be running the whole of the nations Agriculture infrastructure. A man in this position should be an example of the proper way to operate in this industry, not a greedy person willing to exploit individuals who are in our country illegally and are taken advantage of by businesses.
