Back in 1997 I did the graphics and programmed, from scratch in Notepad, a Windows 95 Internet based playable version of Stratego. Dubbed Siege & Capture it went on to win a Golden Calf award from www.tucows.com for best Windows 95 release. Back then Tucows was the shit. I think they still offer software, but are mainly into domain registration now.
I watched as Siege & Capture was picked up by shareware magazines around the world, reviewed and distributed on CD's. I still have some of the magazines. I can't read them though because they're in German and other languages. There was even a 3D version in the works, but was never finished. Siege & Capture was voluntarily discontinued when Hasbro decided to come out with their own version of Internet Stratego* and I didn't feel like being sued.
Well, someone else has come up with their own version of Stratego now. Six Meat Buffet has Stratego For Democrats. While it's not Internet playable, like Siege & Capture was, it is extremely true to life. Check it out.
* I later got emails that Siege & Capture was tons better than the official version released by Hasbro. They should have come to me first.
