In the most asinine judgement I've ever heard a man who repeatedly raped a 7-year-old girl gets only 60 days in jail. Mark Hulett, 34, confessed that he repeatedly raped a 7-year-old girl for more than 4 years. While that is absolutely horrific, the even more horrific thing is that a judge decided that punishment is no longer valid as a sentence.
In a pure sign of arrogance and "holier than thou" attitude of the highest order, Judge Edward Cashman sentenced Mark Hulett to only 60 days in jail. Judge Edward Cashman's reasoning figures that jail is only for rehabilitation and that 60 days ought to be enough to rehabilitate a confessed repeated child rapist.
I call for the head of Judge Edward Cashman! This asshole should be thrown out on his ass and be made to serve a sentence of 60 days with rapists in a jail cell and see how well he thinks they are rehabilitated after 60 days.
Fucking ridiculous!
WCAX
There was outrage Wednesday when a Vermont judge handed out a 60-day jail sentence to a man who raped a little girl many, many times over a four-year span starting when she was seven.
The judge said he no longer believes in punishment and is more concerned about rehabilitation.
Prosecutors argued that confessed child-rapist Mark Hulett, 34, of Williston deserved at least eight years behind bars for repeatedly raping a littler girl countless times starting when she was seven.
...
"The one message I want to get through is that anger doesn't solve anything. It just corrodes your soul," said Judge Edward Cashman speaking to a packed Burlington courtroom. Most of the on-lookers were related to a young girl who was repeatedly raped by Mark Hulett who was in court to be sentenced.
...
But Judge Cashman explained that he is more concerned that Hulett receive sex offender treatment as rehabilitation. But under Department of Corrections classification, Hulett is considered a low-risk for re-offense so he does not qualify for in-prison treatment. So the judge sentenced him to just 60 days in prison and then Hulett must complete sex treatment when he gets out or face a possible life sentence.
Judge Cashman also also revealed that he once handed down stiff sentences when he first got on the bench 25 years ago, but he no longer believes in punishment.
"I discovered it accomplishes nothing of value; it doesn't make anything better; it costs us a lot of money; we create a lot of expectation, and we feed on anger," Cashman explained to the people in the court.
The sentence outraged the victim's family who asked not to be identified.
"I don't like it," the victim's mother, in tears, told Channel 3. "He should pay for what he did to my baby and stop it here. She's not even home with me and he can be home for all this time, and do what he did in my house," she added.
Hulett -- who had been out on bail-- was taken away to start his sentence immediately.
First of all, how the hell this guy is left to roam the community out on bail when he is a admitted rapist? Secondly, I agree totally with the family. This little girl received a life sentence of damage at the hands of this monster and he gets a slap on the wrist and a little time in prison.
If there is any justice in this world this man will be cornered in jail and face the death sentence at the hands of some other vicious criminals like himself.
Did I already say fucking ridiculous once? Oh I guess I have, now I only have to say it another 50 times before the day is out to even get near how pompous and asinine this whole fiasco and the judge in particular is.
Abuse Blog asks a question:
Is this the same 'Hon. Edward Cashman' who participated as a panelist on 'restorative justice' for the left wing organization 'Toward Freedom'. This 'conference' listed as two of it's goals: 1) To promote alternatives to incarceration and rising incarceration rates, better reintegration of prisoners, and restorative justice; 2) To raise public awareness of the crisis of incarceration. Here's more on how that organization views the prison system. And some other intriguing topics.

I've been following this since the judge first announced he was considering such a heinous sentence. You may find it interesting that for the charges against him under Vermont Law, he could have received :
§ 2602. Lewd or lascivious conduct with child=
imprisoned not less than one year and not more than 15 years or fined not more than $5,000.00, or both.
§ 3253. Aggravated sexual assault=
A person who commits the crime of aggravated sexual assault shall be imprisoned up to and including life or fined not more than $50,000.00, or both.

The judge, regardless of what he believes about punishment, had an opportunity to protect our children from this sick man and snubbed his nose at it. Does he have children, does he care about children, is he a child molester himself? How could anybody think this was a just punishment and how in the world did he become a judge?
The judge needs to be disbarred immediately and the sex offender needs to be castrated!

You guys are being way too rough on me! My job is to process court cases quickly, not to let them back up. The jails are full already. Besides, it's not like any of you actually know the victim. It doesn't matter. The little girl needs to learn about the hard salami one way or the other. Besides, I am appointed for life, so not much you fools can do about it. I like my job. And you whining little freaks can't stop me! Besides, the little girls was asking for it, the way she carries her Barbie doll around. She was wanting it. Any good judge would have let that guy off. You guys should be like me, and support the views of NAMBLA. It's clear by my decision that I favor NAMBLA over the will of the people. I DARE YOU TO TRY AND IMPEACH ME, I BET YOU CAN'T DO IT! HA HA - I DARE YOU TO GET ME REMOVED FROM THE BENCH!

I am a homeless guy, living in San Diego. I got a restraining order on me from a child molestor because I beat him up. I believe it was the right thing to do. I'd do it again if I could...the cops don't seem to upset with me for doing it.

I am a 29 year old mom of five children. I have been fighting to protect my daughter whom is now 5 years of age. I have been trying to protect her from her father whom she has said has sexually abused her. Judge Edward Cashman has done the unspeakable... Instead of asking for a Forensic evaluation on her father or even requiring any limitations of his contact with her...He decides I am the problem and takes her custody away from me and gives it to her father!!! The one who has did things to her that are criminal and unforgivable. My daughter has disclosed to a play therapist this sexual abuse in detail. Yet instead of this judge helping to protect her he puts her in the perpetrator's custody!!!!
I understand that some women have made up stories about they're children's father abusing them when it did not really happen. I even think it is labeled as an actual sickness, yet I have never heard of a child making multiple disclosures, being ignored, and then the punishment placed on the child?! I am now not only trying to protect my daughter, I am now trying to re establish my creditability and get my daughter back. I have reached out to politicians and local agencies, yet no one has been able to make a difference. So I am writing you to see if you have anything that I may be able to use to help in my fight to get my daughter back and insure her safety. If nothing else to do what I can to get judge Cashman (who seems to have a thing for looking at sexual abusers as the victim) off the bench to pay for his mess ups!
Please let me know if you know of any way I can get some help.

This sick animal for a judge should be jailed!

This judges decision is just another example of how "we" are too soft on criminals....This man should be given a death sentence..not 2 months in jail. It is not comforting knowing other rapists can see this and think" gee i wont get into too much trouble for this rape i am thinking of commiting. I can handle two months". That thought is outrageous. While being aware there are sometimes cases of false accusations... rape for four years doesnt really sound like it...This worthless rapist loving judge should be removed and ivestigated for his reasoning for this sentence. Whether it be just a softness for rapists, or possible inner wishes of being a rapist himself in hopes that someone would go easy on him as well

IT TAKES A MOLESTER TO PROTECT A MOLESTER
This useless pompous fat blob of shit passing himself off as a judge is defending child molesters cause he may be one of them. What other reason? We all hate molesters and would like to hang them, but he has no hatred for them and wants them released so they can do it again.! Hmmmmmmmm sounds a little fishy to me. I am not surprised, most judges are liberal poofbutts and most criminals never get what they deserve cause the whimpy judicial system is bought and sold and all too quick to cut deals. Just ask a cop. We arrest them and the system lets them free so they can stay in business. Our judges and lawyers are the real criminals and they should be behind bars. When they get raped in prison maybe they will understand that it is a crime not a joke. I would love to see what he would do if it was his child. Yaaahhhh 60 days huh Cashole.

The judge is right -
Prison will accomplish nothing. It is not really an issue of being soft on crime, but jail time, an 8 yr sentence is maybe the worst outcome for all involved.
Jail is not about taking classes on how to be a better person. It is really about informal classes, taught by other criminals on how to cheat the system, beg, cheat, lie, steal, and promotes in a person only excellence in those things counterproductive to a healthy society.
Giving this man an 8yr sentence would accomplish 2 things with certainty: 1.)We (taxpayers) would be paying for this mans food, shelter, healthcare, daily activities and so on, (a figure which is roughly $120/day/inmate), 2.)When this man is released, he has been engrained with the fact that he is a criminal, a sense of worthlessness and an inability to return as a functional member of society. He will be released more dangerous than ever before.
At that point, he can no longer help himself. He has no marketable skills, his understanding and ability to function in the outside world is deteriorated. The state will end up supporting him forever, either when he receives welfare checks or when he finds himself back in prison for the next crime he commits.
As for punishment, very simply, inmates in Vermont prisons have an exceptional quality of life. It is not as bad as you would expect. Television, computers, telephone, 3 meals a day, medical, dental, optical, are all covered. Workout facilities, fooseball, basketball, volleyball, handball. Blame prisoners rights in Vermont, but the judge is right. Prison is not much of a punishment, not much of a deterrent, and just the opposite of rehabilitation.
Foolishness is to continue to do the same thing, and expect the results to be different. The judge may not have a perfect solution, but congratulations to him for bringing this subject into the light. 8-20 years may be "justice", but it's a terrible answer. We need to think a few moves ahead. It is not an issue of being too soft. 60 days in jail and rehabilitate him. Draft him into the military. Maybe mandatory castration. We don't have a perfect answer, but we already know what happens if he gets 8 to 20.

You know this is Quite sad, I mean even with the fact of the loser who poses as the Judge and leaves a retarded comment as what is left. If they really wanted to press the issue they could find out who you really are. A judge in his right mind wouldn't post something so ignorant and stupid. What this world should do, is what they seem to keep a good job of doing is putting ankle bracelets on all sex offenders, you wanna rape a child, or teenager or even an adult and give them the feeling that they have been hurt in some way, make it obvious that a Sex Offender is who they are, brand it on there foreheads. So not only do they wake up and realize what Losers they are but also so that when they feel they can go about freely in the world, they'll realize what ignorant losers they really are! Give them a drink to emoblize them, so they become nothing better then a vegetable staring at a wall for the rest of there boring lives! The only reason why you can't do any of this is no matter how you look at it, you will always have those pathetic people out there saying "I can rehabilitate him or her!" with there hands held up so high! In my mind you should be takin in for rehabilitation too if you can actually sit down with someone and not get mad for what they have done, thinking you could actually rehabilitate somoene who has committed a crime so sick and disgusting! And the dumb part about this whole thing is that us people actually sit and let the government get away with thinking that losers out there can actually get away with rehabilitating people. You commit a crime you deal with the consequences, at least this is what I was taught back in grade school. The only way to shut down these Sex Offenders to rape them back, give them lives to which instead of thinking "Hey at least I can spend the winter in jail, and get out in the summer" or "Wow a whole 3 years of lifting weights and learning more and more stuff" while in jail, jesus you commit a crime and you start off a bum you get out of jail with a degree of something??? How pathetic is this? Make it almost seem as is "Hey my life sucks, I'll go to jail and come out with a Degree that even I didn't have to pay for!! Wooo Hoo I'm all set. Fucking Pathetic this world is! We are over in Iraq bombing buildings for practice, there isn't anything else over there, how long have we been there? And where are thses Weapons Of Mass Destruction? O wait I get it, still looking? We are paying for our own mens lives in Iraq to die. When we should be facing more on what is wrong in our own country, not everyone elses!
-Josh
P.S. I hope I sparked someones mind to actually do something then just sit there and say "yeah thats right" a lot of good you're doing.

Unfortunately folks our legal system is missing the mark daily. I have first hand knowledge as I have worked in corrections/prison system for over 10 years. If you had any idea the type of sentences criminals are receiving you'd never beleive it. This judge in Vermont is not the only idiot on the bench. I hear the people of Vermont are not really that much up in arms over this. I hope this isn't so. Push to get this guy convicted on a federal crime-he can be tried federally after his State sentence. Then, do everything in your power to have the judge disbarred! WAKE UP PEOPLE!

JUDGE CASHMAN SHOULD BE REMOVED FRON THE BENCH IMMEDIATLY
Posted by: mary weinberger on January 22, 2006 09:51 PM
It takes a very strong person, let alone child, to admit that they are being abused and taken advantage of.
There are many hurdles a victim must overcome to actually get their case to court.
And when, after eveything they are their family has been though, this is what they get? It is the epitome of dispicable. It makes me sick.
My own case was let off because I was only four and could not testify for myself. Now that I'm eightteen, too much time has passed since, and I lawyer would cost too much anyways. All of the children in my neighbourhood were repeatedly molested and abused and the justice system didn't do shit.
What does that tell you about the world? About our society?
The cunts who molested me, my younger brother, a close friend of mine and his younger brother and sister, along with the rest of our neighbourhood go by the names of Tanya and Lana Nanachef. I'm not sure if the spelling of the last name is correct, but that's how it's pronounced. Please be careful.

I think they could solve the problem simply by cutting off the penis, cause pain to the perp. who did the crime. That can limit sexual abuse. They should do the same to the judge. Since the judical system doesn't seem to work and jail is just causing worse criminals and it is taking our tax money to appeal their cases. If Jail doesn't work execute them Once a rapist or a killer always a rapist and a killer.
Posted by: Corie on March 20, 2006 05:46 PM
Male perps will never be chemically or surgically castrated as long as male justices/judges decide the sentenced--the good ol' boy attitude. Over 15 years ago, a 5-year-old was molested and the perp was caught. The judge in the case gave a minimum sentence to the perp claiming that the little girl had acted in a "seductive and lascivious manner"--in other words, she asked for it. As long as shitheads like this upholds the law, the Law will be a joke. Other men in this world need to rally for decency and, dare I say, retribution, for children. Our society treats these crimes as if they were of no consequence!!!

I am very upset. Regardless of what he judge believed that man needs to know he is not a victim and deserves to be punished for what he did. That girl will suffer so much becasue of what that man did and it's not fair he shouldn't suffer to. What sort of message does that send to her? That she is worthless? I hate this world. Ii just can't take it. Ii hate men. Ii think tehy are ugly scum and Ii am so angry does that judge know what sick thingst hey say and think he did it coz he thinks he can and now he will get ioff htinking its okay to do taht kinda stuff. WTF! The poor Mother, legally she should be lalowed to murder that monster.

I remember this case, but something is left out. This guy not only repeatedly raped this little girl he also brought a friend in on it and allowed him to rape her also repeatedly. his trial at the time hadn't come before the judge yet who also plans to give him a similar sentence. That guy is angry at the first rapist for getting him involved although there was no force needed to insert his penis only oppurtunity. ther parents are mentally retarded and that is why these creeps where able to take advantage. complaints were made by others and the child welfare as usual did absolutely nothing and this child was in continued danger. now the reason the parents say child is not with them is because since all this has come to light and been proven now child welfare has taken custody of the child from the parents now this child is majorly fucked up i mean i saw a politician on tv confronting this a persone/lawyer for defending judge actions and the person tried to justify his actions. but i tuned in on how pastionate the politcian was that he met the little girl and he asked the person defending judge actions - you know she is not coming back, you know she is already gone and the person paused and said yes. It was that moment that did something to me. no matter what oathes you take as a lawyer when your personally defend such actions, look a child in the face , see what these two men did to her, admit she is spirtually and mentally dead, and say my compassion is with the 2 disgusting vile inhumane beings that took this child life! NO AMOUNT OF MISERY SHOULD STOP AT YOUR DOOR! THE RAFT OF GOD SHOULD COME UPON YOU IMMEDIATELY! AND YOU SHOULD NOT PRACTICE LAW AGAIN! i'm not saying creeps don't have a right to defense, but it ended when the case did. It's the personal oppinion and heart that the person took on the road to push the judges agenda after looking that girl in her eyes!
Posted by: d on June 16, 2009 08:01 AM
This asshole of a judge should be put in the same situation the little girl was in for 4 years. Rape the bastard with a bat every day for 4 years. If you can't handle your job judge, then get the f_ _ _ out. Lock the effen judge up with the rapist. High time for long over due vigilante justice. The damn judges are just as mentally challenged as the perpetrators.
Posted by: Frank on November 26, 2009 12:31 PM
I totally disagree with the judgement as well as do most on here. But the thing is the guy will most likely be killed in prison. Jail and prison are two different things.
Jail is a wussy form of any kind of punishment. Prison is an adults form of punishment where you stand up and fight align yourself with a crew or get harrassed beat or killed. In prison most inmates out of respect and love for kids will kill any new child rapist they find on their block.
So whats worse is that the staff will go out of their way to secure the safety of the rapists. Its rule of thumb kill or rape a child your dead. kill your daught or family your dead. Jail is more like arts and crafts, lame as always you get put into a tank with people like you and you all get along and make little hamocks wet them down put the hot sodas in the hamocks and hang them from the air ducts in about 2 hours its cold as ice.
Point being if anyone in prison has their way this guy wouldnt get out alive. And as for the judge he should be removed from his seat and stoned in the face until his eyes cant open to see anything hopefully he wount be a vegetable afterwards because he deserves to live and struggle through his life like that.

When this 'judge' announced his nothing sentence the family (especially the father of the little girl) should have jumped him and beat his brains out!
I would have shouted to the judge that both he and the animal he released would die.
What's bad is if this had happened the father would have been sentence to years for his threat!
