The voters of Farmers Branch went to the polls and overwhelmingly approved of a measure to crack down on landlords who rent to illegal aliens. That's right, nearly 70% of Farmers Branch voters approved! This is the first time an ordinance of this nature has went to a citizen vote. All other ordinances were passed by city councils.
In addition, David Koch and Tim Scott won their council member election bids. Koch won with almost 64% of the vote. Scott won with around 66% of the vote. Both are proponents of the ordinance.
The ordinance is similar to one passed in Hazleton, Pennsylvania which was challenged in court by the ACLU and other large national pro illegal immigration groups. The verdict is still out in that case. Farmers Branch will also face lawsuits according to those who opposed the ordinance, but then forced it to a vote of the people of the town..
Dallas Morning News
The nation's first vote on an ordinance targeting illegal immigrants by barring them from renting apartments highlighted a resentment of the federal government's failure to secure the nation's borders – and a desire to do something about it at the local level, said City Council member Tim O'Hare, who was the driving force behind the ordinance.
"They are saying loud and clear they want change in Farmers Branch," he said. "People recognize we have a problem, and they are proud we stood up. This is nothing but positive results for Farmers Branch."
Mr. O'Hare's message that illegal immigrants are having a negative impact on neighborhoods, crime, property values and schools may soon be heard in other cities.
"I'd be shocked if I didn't see other cities follow suit," he said. "I've been contacted by representatives from other cities. Any city that wants to protect their town, give me a call, and let us work together."
Here's a little hate filled snippet from the opponents of the ordinance (courtesy of Immigration Watchdog) who wasted no time in playing the race card and saying that 70% of Farmers Branch, Texas citizens are simply racists.
The racist electorate of Farmers Branch, Texas has approved by a 68% – 32% (preliminary results) vote, an ordinance that would fine landlords and property managers $500.00 for renting to the undocumented.
Wow, the "racist electorate".
And the most hilarious quote is from Travis Carter of Let the Voters Decide, a group opposed to the ordinance who now is probably kicking himself for "letting the voters decide".
"We're disappointed in the result, but I think the campaign was successful in that it was able to elevate the level of debate about this ordinance and prove the many ways this ordinance is costly and ill-advised," said the spokesman, Travis Carter. "Because of our campaign, there isn't a community or city in North Texas that would think to support an ordinance like this."
A little sour grapes there Travis? How does it feel to have your teeth kicked in by the voters? The pro-illegal alien propaganda by these groups can only go so far. The majority of Americans in poll after poll are right in line with those of Farmers Branch. Polls always show a clear majority of 70-90% of Americans are in favor of not giving illegal aliens social services or making their lives so easy here by allowing them to obtain housing, jobs, bank accounts or any other services that are reserved in this country for legal residents and citizens.
The voters have spoken!
