The city council of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania is attempting to squelch the free speech rights of groups in the area by imposing what amounts to a free speech tax. The free speech tax will be in excess of $1,000 for the right to protest or rally. Wilkes-Barre is just down the road a few miles from Hazleton and it can almost be ensured that this proposal is aimed at groups like Voice of the People USA who have been holding rallies and protests against illegal immigration.
In response, Voice of the People USA is holding a rally this Thursday at the city council meeting to oppose their free speech tax and all are invited. Every American should oppose such implementation of laws like this that seek to shut down the expression of free speech in this country.
Here are the rally details and statement from Dan Smeriglio, founder of Voice of the People.
I want to remind you that this Thursday Feb. 28th at 5:30pm, Voice of the People USA Political Action Committee returns to blast a city council that wants to charge hard working American citizens in excess of a thousand dollars just to utilize our rights of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly! Now more than ever we must stand up against those who wish to oppress all of us!
Politicians want all of us to gather and come out in droves on election day, after that they could care a less about what we have to say! Let's remind them that brave men and women have fought and continue to fight for our god given rights as Americans, how dare this city council slap every American in the face and how dare we allow them to do so! I ask you all to join us and stand up for our rights as citizens of the greatest country in the world!
Let's show them that they cannot and will not silence, the voice of the people!

I live in California but originally from Pennsylvania. I apologize I could not be in Pa. For this demonstration but it so hard to imagine how the heck has it become possible that Pennsylvania’s’ have become so tolerant of giving up their freedoms and becoming so tolerant of illegal aliens dictating laws to Americans as the candy pansy sissies have done so in California and politics and taxes are dictated by illegal aliens demands.
After 12 years in Ca. hopefully I will be returning home to Pennsylvania, because California is no longer a part of the United States of America. This political bastardizing of our constitution and tearing away of Americans rights must stop. Pennsylvania has to take the lead as or forefathers had and restore our country liberty, rights and freedoms for our selves and our posterity. Not the posterity of ever third world country, whose people have invade our soil as we watch our cities crumble and our children suffer.
Maybe these immoralists and socialists were sleeping in History class or PolySci 101 or just conviently forgotten Americas Constitution. The last two rights granted under the First Amendment to our Constitution happens' to be called (public and peaceful assembly). I hope some one has the sense to take city council to court and sue them over this obvious unlawful activity.
One’s right to life, liberty, and property, to free speech, a free press, freedom of worship and assembly, and other fundamental rights may not be submitted to vote; they depend on the outcome of no elections.” — Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)
“First Amendment freedoms are most in danger when the government seeks to control thought or to justify its laws for that impermissible end. The right to think is the beginning of freedom, and speech must be protected from the government because speech is the beginning of thought.”—Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, Ashcroft V. Free Speech Coalition

I would just like to thank Dan "Digger Amato" for putting this story out there for you all to be made aware of! Thanks to people such as digger that aren't afraid to put the truth out there, citizens like you and me can be kept in the know of what really going on in this country and not just the trash that big media wants us to know about! Dan Amato and Ruth Miller are two people that have gone above and beyond in regards to dedicating themselves to standing up and fighting for our rights as american citizens! Both of you are incredible people and I have been truly blessed by meeting the both of you.
People, it is apparent that with the upcoming presidential election america is going to be in a bad way! It is important to continue to stand your ground and to never back down in the face of adversity! We as americans have the right to stand up and speak out, this country is based on that and we can never lose sight of what made america the greatest country in the world! We need someone like a Lou Dobbs for president of thise great nation, but if he doesn't decide to be a third party candidate, then I urge you to do what I am planning on doing---I am writing in DAN AMATO, FOR PRESIDENT!!!! We need a person who isn't afraid to tell it the way it is as commander in chief! He has served our country and continues to serve our country on a day to day basis, by keeping us informed and by holding those who are deserving accountable for their blatant acts of treason against this nation! Think about it! Thats all for now, thank you all and god bless you all and as always god bless america!
ps. Always remember, our bill of rights outlines our freedoms as citizens of this great land! It includes many wonderful things but, the one thing that it does not include is -- A PRICE TAG!!!
