Rhode Island
Governor Don Carcieri has signed an executive order that forces the state to verify that its employees are legally in the country. In addition it also instructs that any businesses that receive state contracts also verify the legal status of their employees.
Carcieri linked budget concerns in the state, estimated at a deficit of $550 million a year, with the costs of illegal aliens. The governor has also instructed state law enforcement to step up enforcement of immigration laws and initiate deportation of illegal aliens in state prisons. In other words 287(g) training from the Department of Homeland Security.
This governor is what this country needs. Someone to step forward and make the right decisions for his state as his residents are bearing the costs and crime inherent with illegal immigration.
Fox News
Linking the presence of undocumented workers to Rhode Island's financial woes, Gov. Don Carcieri signed an executive order that includes a series of steps to combat illegal immigration.
The order signed Thursday requires state agencies and companies that do business with the state to verify the legal status of employees. It also directs the Rhode Island State Police and prison and parole officials to more aggressively find and deport illegal immigrants.
Kudos to you Governor Don Carcieri!

As a former RI resident, thank you Gov. Carcieri! Even when I lived there from '86-'93 there were plenty of illegals, mostly from Cape Verde Island, Portugal, Brazil (large Portugeuse community), etc. It's about time this liberal little states cracks down on illegals!!!!

It took years though, to convince Carcieri to take a stand. I'm a liberal democrat from RI, and I've been complaining to his office for years now about needing to take a stand. Carcieri has appointed illegal alien advocates to state agencies like DCYF, and the woman he appointed has forced state welfare offices to accept applications for welfare, medicaid, food stamps, etc.. without documentation. The entire city of Central Falls's school budget, is paid for by the state, since former Governor Lincoln Almond (republican) took it over. CF is majority illegal, and is a hell hole, filled with illegals who run the huge drug trade, since the '80s. The costs of ESL in RI have destroyed the budgets of struggling cities and towns.
Some cities and towns, like Pawtucket, have pushed out citizen workers from municipal departments and replaced them with illegals. The personnel director of the city of Pawtucket is a former illegal alien himself, and has a disgraceful personal history (anyone examining his criminal record, and his case in the state worker's compensation court, long before he was hired by the corrupt mayor, James Doyle)

Don Carcieri did a really good job laying off unionized state custodial employees and replacing them with outsourced immigrant workers from companies which have admitted to knowingly hiring undocumented workers.
He's a pro at talking out both sides of his mouth.
