Blacks Don't Vote For Obama Just Because He's Black - Yeah Right

Bookmark and Share

"Black people aren't voting for Obama just because he's black"

That has to be the most hilarious statement ever. There are those out there who would have you believe that blacks aren't voting for Obama simply because he's black, but the reality is that there is still racism in America. And the numbers show that the racism isn't just coming from white America.

National Review

Black Democrats are voting largely along racial lines. With few policy differences between the candidates, Obama won 92 percent of the black vote in Mississippi, 91 percent in Wisconsin, 87 percent in Ohio, 84 percent in Maryland, and 84 percent in Texas.

Keep on believing that racism only comes from whites. Also keep believing that the Democratic Party - and Democrats in general - are the party of "tolerance".

In the end all of these voters are absolutely stupid. Not just because they're racist, but because they are not voting on what is best for the country and who lines up with their beliefs. They are voting on melanin.

I would never vote for Obama. Not because he's black, but because he doesn't stand for what is right and needed for America. He's a lot of talk and good speeches, but his substance and past record are on the socialist fringe. Surprisingly - at least to those of you who think that my decision is based on race - I wouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton or John McCain either. Give me a person who is Black, Asian, Hispanic, White or any other ethnicity or race who would actually secure the borders and end illegal immigration and they'll have my vote and support.

Oh and I suppose I'll be called a racist for pointing out the truth that blacks are voting for Obama because he's black.

I sob for my country.

Exactly point on. I remember a Chris Rock comedy bit about racism. In it he talks about old black men and how racist they are. It got a lot of laughs among a predominately black audience.

When you get right down to it, only white people in this country are not publicly, socially and culturally allowed to be racist. If your of a different race or ethnicity (not white) you can pretty much get by with it. Obama's minister has been doing it for years and only recently has much been publicly said about it. Can you imagine the uproar if we had organizations representing white people that were called The Race or The Nation Organization For the Advancement of White People? Or how about college funding organizations that only gave to white students?

As Geraldine Ferraro pointed out, Obama would be no where if he wasn't black. Any white candidate that said exactly what he has said, would be considered another smooth talking politician with no plan and little understanding of where the American people are.
But because he is black, the MSM falls all over him and a majority of Blacks will vote for him. He will also get the support of those suffering from "white guilt". For some it is only about race and ethnicity. For others it is about picking a winner - like the election is a horse race and you are going to win something. Only a small portion of the voters in this country really make an informed vote.

I too sob for our country. The founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves.

Well stated Brad. It's just sickening the hypocrisy and double standard that blacks think they make jokes about whitey, crackers, white people can't dance, etc. yet if a white person said something about blacks that's stereotypical, it'd be RACIST. What a double standard. How about everyone just respecting every individual and dropping the race/victimhood whining? I'm tired of it. It sickens me to think that Obama and his equally racist/hateful wife Michelle could be in the WH soon! Please, PA, IN, NC, etc. voters, vote for HILLARY, even if you're a Republican. Switch over to vote for Hillary. She makes me sick, but Obama is much more dangerous for our country's national security and prosperity.

You can't open a can of soda anymore without someone calling you a racist. You voted for Obama. You must be racist. You didn't vote for Obama. You're racist too. You drink Coke Zero with the black can? You must be racist. You drink Mountain Dew? You must be racist. Grow up.

LOL! I think this person who wrote this article is misinformed. It is not just blacks who are voting for Obama it's the minorities. He speaks for the minorities; He speaks change. As for blacks or minorities being racist because we have organizations just for us, Whites have organizations just for them for decades since they stopped slavery. Not being racist just stating the truth. We have these organizations to make sure that minorities have the same oppurtunites as the majority. The fact is it is harder for minorities to reach success than it is for the majority. Why? because we are the MINORITY!

Posted by: SMS on April 22, 2008 12:16 PM

SMS, I am saddened by your inability to assimilate into the mainstream U.S. culture. Let me remind you that hispanics are poised to become the numerical MAJORITY in California and other Southwest states in a matter of years; yet, we are all familiar with MEChA, etc. etc. Your argument is based upon the faulty premise that minorities are incapable of utilizing the same opportunities available to whites. I know that I will not be able to persuade you as it is all too apparent that you have signed on with the defeatist/blame-shifting mentality of the majority of the minorities. The exit polling for the current PA primary is a crystal-clear example of what this article attempts to point out, blacks are overwhelmingly, nay obviously supporting Obama because he is black. Drudgereport indicates that 92 percent of blacks voted for Obama... 92 percent! Whereas, an almost split 60-40 of whites voted for Hillary and Obama, respectively. Indeed, your rant essentially conceded exactly what the article is positing. You state that the minorities are voting for Obama, and attempt to argue that he "speaks for the minorities." This essentially means that the minorities are voting for Obama because Obama is a minority. Just out of curiosity, just how does Obama speak for the minorities? What is the change he stands for? I know you are unable to answer these questions. Please, refrain from political expression, including voting, until you are capable of understanding the issues AND the ramifications of the policy positions of the candidates. Personally, I would never vote for EITHER Obama or Hillary. Both stand for socialist programs that would further eviscerate the already over-burdened middle class.

Posted by: Learned Scholar on April 22, 2008 07:17 PM

It's a shame that SMS fancies himself a victim because he is "the MINORITY!" It's also a shame that he said the article was "misinformed", yet failed to explain how.

Get real. If you're going to dog blacks, dog women too, who have been specifically courted by Hillary, with her telling made-up anecdotes about parents whispering to their daughters that "they can do anything" because they see Hillary stumping. She has won a large contingency of female voters.
I have good faith in the majority of the country to vote for who they like as a candidate. Because there are few policy differences, yes, the candidate as a person is a larger factor in voters' decisions.
However, this crap about white people not being allowed to be racist is ridiculous. Are you admitting that you are racist, and want to show it? In the words of Avenue Q, everyone's a little bit racist. People have a natural tendency to seek out people that they perceive as being like themselves. That doesn't mean that they aren't intelligent people. First-time women voters may look at Hillary first, because she is a woman, and then consider all of their options and make a decision. The same thing is happening with Obama. People are interested in him because he is not the "typical" presidential candidate, and his candidacy brigs in a number of people to elections, simply because they saw him and got interested in the race.

Posted by: A white female voter for Obama on April 24, 2008 01:12 PM

dog women too, who have been specifically courted by Hillary

They are just as wrong. As are all of the people who just pull the R or D lever just because it's an R or D and not because the candidate will actually do what you want them to.

People have a natural tendency to seek out people that they perceive as being like themselves

Nothing wrong with that that I can see. Mens clubs, womens clubs, black clubs, hispanics clubs and *gasp* white clubs. Where it becomes racist or improper is when you are actively seeking out for your "club" to receive benefits that others don't receive because of their race or gender.

For instance, the Hispanic or Black Caucuses in Congress. These groups are based around getting something for people based off of race that others won't receive - such as affirmative action - whereas Caucuses like the Immigration Caucus, the Business Caucus or even the Internet Caucus are pressing an issue which is legal to all citizens and legal residents whether they come from Guatemala, Korea or Eastern Europe or are native born.

First-time women voters may look at Hillary first, because she is a woman, and then consider all of their options and make a decision. The same thing is happening with Obama.

I beg to differ. Most American are looking at them as a woman or a black man and then... and then... and then... nothing. They do not even know where the candidates stand on the issues and the candidates don't want to expound on the issues because they know if they do people may be turned off.

America is so image conscience that the large majority of these supporters cannot even tell you where the candidates stand on a variety of issues. Yet they'll go out and tell everyone "vote for them". You place too much faith in people actually going beyond the surface appearance and taking time out of their day to actually do some research. Hell many people don't even vote so what makes you think that those who do actually cracked some books?

My experience has shown that most people don't go that far. Where it becomes funny is when you talk to them and they say it's not because of race or sex yet clearly it is when things like exit polls in PA show that 92% of blacks voted for Obama. You'd figure that quite a bit more than 8% of blacks - after looking at both their records and their issues stances - would side with Hillary. That's just basic statistics because they don't vary THAT much on the issues.

his candidacy brigs in a number of people to elections, simply because they saw him and got interested in the race.

Got interested in the race indeed.

The argument that Black people are voting for Barack because he is Black is false for a few different reasons:

> African-Americans have voted in similar numbers (82%-90%) for Democratic candidates for the past twenty years or more. John Kerry, for example, received 88% of the Black vote. Al Gore 90%. Were Black people racist in favor of whites and then suddenly turned a corner this year? Not likely. The attached article shows Black voting percentages since 1976.

http://www.theroot.com/id/46473/page/1

> Also Black support for Obama was low at the beginning of the campaign and tilted more heavily for Clinton:

"In an ABC News/Washington Post poll taken in mid-January, Clinton received 53 percent of African-Americans' support; Obama received 27 percent. The poll also found 85 percent of blacks view Clinton favorably, while 12 percent view her unfavorably. Only 59 percent of African-Americans said they had a favorable opinion of Obama, to 19 percent with an unfavorable opinion."

Jan 22, 2007 Politico

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0107/2402.html

> Finally, there was good reason for Blacks to abandon Hillary's campaign. Several of her suurogates made comments that Blacks perceived to be racially charged (Andrew Young, Bob Johnson, Gerraldine Ferraro, Bill Clinton, etc.)

This argument that Blacks are voting for Obama because he is Black or that Blacks are racist for voting for Obama is false.

Posted by: tubbs on May 13, 2008 09:55 AM

@ tubbs:
Your poll numbers were between the REPUBLICAN Nominee and the DEMOCRATIC nominee during the GENERAL ELECTION. Yes, blacks have historically voted about 90% for the Democratic Candidate. HOWEVER, both Hillary and Obama are Democrats, and I see no evidence in your link that suggests any one candidate in the primary generally draws any disproportionate percentage of the black vote.

As for your second point, I think that looking at actual poll numbers would provide you with a much more accurate representation of Obama's hold on the black vote.
On January 26th, a mere 4 days after the article you cited was written, Obama won the South Carolina primary with 78% of the black vote.
January 29th, one week later, in Florida (a state which Senator Clinton handedly won) Obama still carried 73% of the black vote.
And now, during the May 6th race in North Carolina, Obama won 91% of the black vote, yet only 37% of the white vote. Unless your point is that his plan/policies are that much more appealing to black voters, it's ridiculous for you to deny the fact that he is winning the black vote because of his race.
As for your last point, I refuse to comment. We all know one need not turn far to see Obama supporters making "racially charged" comments.

Posted by: mrblueboy on May 14, 2008 07:33 PM

mrblueboy,

A couple of points:

On Blacks voting patterns in primaries: Bill Clinton won large majorities of the Black vote during the 1992 Democratic primary. This (as well as the rest of the evidence I've presented) flies in the face of the notion that Blacks are voting in large numbers for Obama because they are racist:

"In 1992, Bill Clinton captured huge majorities of the black vote in Democratic primaries in key states, winning at least 70 percent in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas, according to surveys of voters leaving the polls."

NY Times

Your point that Obama's Black vote has increased during the primary actually supports my argument that Blacks are not voting for him because they are racist. If Blacks were voting for Obama because he is Black (or against Hillary because she is white) wouldn't that have been the case from the beginning? What changed? How could Black voters be racist in favor of Obama when they supported Hillary more than Obama at the outset of the campaign?:

"In the eyes of black voters, Hillary Clinton has a slight edge over Barack Obama, according to a survey released Tuesday. The New York senator was viewed favorably by 83 percent of black voters, compared to Obama's 74 percent."

NPR

On the point that you refuse to comment on (that Blacks abandoned Hillary's campaign as a result of her surrogates racially charged comments), I'm not sure what is so controversial. Hillary's surrogates made racially charged comments and Black voters fled. Rev. Wright made racially charged comments and white people fled from Obama. What is controversial about pointing out those facts?

If Black voters were voting for Obama because they are racist then I would expect to see exit polling showing the kind of data that shows racial animus such as:

"An AP-Yahoo poll conducted April 2-14 found that “about 8 percent of whites would be uncomfortable voting for a black for president.”

Politico

Do you have some kind of data aside from the fact that a large number of Blacks are voting for Obama (which is not evidence of anything except the fact that Blacks vote as a bloc) that shows Blacks voting with similar racial animus?

And really let's look at the premise here: Large numbers of Blacks vote for a Black person therefore Blacks are racist. Can you apply the same premise to white people? Large numbers of whites vote for a White person therefore Whites are racist? uh, no. The fact that large numbers of Black people voted for a Black person is not, by itself, evidence that Blacks voted that way because they are racist. This is logic 101.

Posted by: tubbs on May 16, 2008 11:35 AM

tubbs-
Bill Clinton was a much more popular candidate during the primary race. Running against 4 other people he managed 57% of the TOTAL Georgia vote. Overall, he ended up winning more than 50% of the vote for that primary season; a magnificent feat, considering all of the competition.
He also managed to win 39 states. Perhaps he carried such a large percentage of the Black vote simply because he was carrying a large percentage of the Democratic vote?

I must point out that I am NOT saying Obama is winning the Black vote because Black voters are racist. I do disagree with the article in that respect, however I think you will find most people here are simply saying that many black voters are looking first at Obama's race, and then at his policies when voting.
This is much more likely to be associated with an "our time is finally here" feeling than a racist statement.
Also, wouldn't you admit that the percentages might have taken a while to tilt into Barack's favor simply because his lack of experience made voters weary as to whether he was actually a serious candidate?
And just how early would this change have to have occurred in order for you to consider the possibility that it was about race? Because omitting Iowa and New Hampshire (due to their relatively small black population) and Michigan because Obama's name was not on the ballot, Obama won 83% of the black vote in the first state where there was a black vote to win (Nevada).

Once again, I reiterate, there is a HUGE difference between being racist while voting, and voting because of race.
It is true, you are much less likely to find black voters who would refuse to vote for Hillary because she is white than white voters who would refuse to vote for Obama because he is black---
But my point is Obama’s disproportionate margin of victory in the Black vote can really only be explained by him getting votes due to his race.

Posted by: mrblueboy on May 17, 2008 12:28 AM

Mr. Blueboy I would re-check the title and first couple of sentences of this article as well as some of the comments posted here to determine whether people are saying that Blacks are voting for Obama because they are racist:

"Blacks Don't Vote For Obama Just Because He's Black - Yeah Right"

"Exactly point on. I remember a Chris Rock comedy bit about racism. In it he talks about old black men and how racist they are. It got a lot of laughs among a predominately black audience.

When you get right down to it, only white people in this country are not publicly, socially and culturally allowed to be racist."

"Well stated Brad. It's just sickening the hypocrisy and double standard that blacks think they make jokes about whitey, crackers, white people can't dance, etc. yet if a white person said something about blacks that's stereotypical, it'd be RACIST. What a double standard. "

etc.

Good discussion, though, and I appreciate your civility, best, tubbs

There is no way around this...its racism for many and bias for many more.

Of course many blacks and whites agree with him. But We are talking 90% of the vote--sorry but that doesnt happen in a Democratic primary. If 90% of the white vote went for Clinton in every state there would be riots.

Look, we all know it there. OJ, the bloody murderer was set free because of it. The cops are hated in black communities because of it. Whites are considered the ememy by many blacks. Its a fact

At this point in our history it is blacks who hold the lower opinion of whites. Its to the point that whites have to act extra nice to blacks so they dont get all paranoid about what we are thinking.

None of us were involved in slavery, most of the white racists are dead or decrepit. Yet we have bear the brunt of this snotty chip on their shoulders which comes from plain ignorance

When I get pulled over by a cop...I think--what did I do? They think it because their black. When they get fired..it because their black. Everything that happens to them happens because they are black. It sheer paranoia. They are trying so hard to be hated that that if this continues their wish will come true.

Their leaders incite this paranoia and they buy it. They are taught--it us against them. Newsflash--we dont say that about you. Until a black leader has the intelligence, wisdom, and courage to chastise the black community for its distorted view of reality, this will never end.

the adage is true: if you are a democrat before the age of thirty you have no heart; if you are one after the age of thirty, you have no brain. Obama appeals to people who aren't smart enough to look past his oratory skill to see HE HAS NO REAL POLICY OR LEADERSHIP STRATEGY! i could give a shit what color he is. oh, but i don't support the black guy so that makes me a big racist, right? whatever. i've been called worse. being insulted by stupid people is a compliment.

Black people typically vote Democrat. Now, if Obama was a republican and 90% of blacks were switching over to vote for him, then you might have an argument. Also, was this argument made when catholics helped put JFK in office? or when Italians helped get Rudy G into the Mayors seat in NYC? Or when Hispanics helped elect the first HIspanic MAyor of Los Angeles? I think not.

Here are the percentages of the Black Vote that democrats recieved in a few past elections:

2000 Al Gore 90%
1996 Bill Clinton 84%
1992 Bill Clinton 83%
1988 Michael Dukakis 90%
1984 Walter Mondale 90%

it looks to me that ALL Democratic candidates received about the same support from Black people that Obama is getting. true enough, we weren't as vocal and passionate about them as we are Obama, but they still got our votes.

Posted by: Jelani on September 5, 2008 04:16 PM

Tubbs...your an idiot. Blacks are voting for Obama because he is black. Period. Since theres never been a black candidate before, theyve always just voted democrat in the past because the democrats are big supporters of welfare which some blacks are on. Also tubbs...look at the past...alot of blacks will vote this year for Obama cuz hes black...look at the past...blacks always have the lowest voter turnouts. So while u can keep saying that the majority of blacks are voting for democrat...its cuz only a very small percentage of blacks actually have gone out and voted in the past...and i haveta be honest...my black friends have no clue on any issue that america faces...and they never have...but theyll be voting for black obama

Posted by: TruthBeTold on September 22, 2008 01:28 AM

Also people lets remember...More and more people are realizing that blacks are being more racists than whites in recent years and have played the race card numerous times. Lets be fair...I have black friends and im good friends with them....but even they admit it...the majority of blacks look out for whats best for them and don't give a rats ass about another race...but there are still some whites who are the same way...so u could also say....all these people who are saying if obama loses, its cuz of racist whites...ummm...he has just as many blacks voting for him just cuz hes black....so it equals out.

Posted by: TruthBeTold on September 22, 2008 01:33 AM

This entire thing is stupid. Obama is only being voted for because he's black. If anyone has ever seen the movie, "The Great White Hope" with James Earl Jones where he plays a boxer and all of his people, come to see him fight and they are saying You're the only hope we have Joe, that's why we believe in you and you are making black folks proud. He says basically to them do not Cheer for me because I'm black, Cheer for me because you believe in my ability as a fighter to win. I'm sorry but Blacks are voting for Obama because he's black. I mean people who haven't even voted before are coming out of the woodwork voting for him because of his skin color. Even Hillary is voting for McCain truth be known. Oh and all the crap about he's mixed, he's not fully black, I mean where is his Mom? Deceased so who really knows? Why even bring that up? WHY? Because he wants the white vote. Give me a break. Vote for who you believe in. I am.

My question is why? When better than 90% of us as blacks vote for one party (Democrats) where is "our" voice. We marginalize ourselves by voting this way. Obama is a Socialist/ Marxist. His political ideas are dangerous for this country. All you have to do is look at his voting record. I'm an independent conservative. I serve God, my country, and my family. I have a good job and actually love my country. It's worked for me, so, I'll sticking with it. I'm saddened that we as blacks are perceived to be in the back pocket of the Democrat Party. It effectively makes our vote meaningless. We are placed into the position of having backed (especially these last 8yrs) a looser. Which in turn places us, as blacks ,in a position being like beggars coming to the table for scrapes. This post is dead on and crystal clear. Check out the article I have posted below. This is how we are perceived in America today. What is Obama doing to counter this perception of us a blacks in this country. I don't need catchy phrases or flowery speech. I want to be thought of as a free thinking "individual" that has an important viewpoint on the course of our nation who just happens to be black. Obama doesn't represent the change that I'm looking for. I certainly don't agree with his politics. I said "politics". I didn't say race, religion, creed, or sexually preference. Now this doesn't mean McCain is any better. He's a dried up old fossil that may or may not live out his presidency. He's been in office almost as long as I've been alive. In the last 8yrs he's managed to piss-off just about his whole base. He's a R.I.N.O., people (Republican In Name Only). Who the hell does he represent?!?! So, here we are. The worst of the worst on both sides of the isle. You decide, America...

Could Obama’s Race Cost Him the Election?

Posted by: Andrew on September 23, 2008 09:24 AM

You decide America?... thought I'd carry on from there. After reading every post on this thread and not seeing my position, here goes:

I will vote for the candidates/ticket whose party platform, political voting record, stump speeches, debate answers and everything he/she stands for is closest to that of The Lord Jesus Christ; He is right on every issue. Since we all fall short, I'll use the perfect standard as a foundation for what's truth and right. The one that agrees with Christ (as revealed in His Word, The Holy Bible), gets my vote.
Makes my decision easy.

Truly Alarming

Stop with the nonsense please. Really. At leat try to act educated when you have a website.

So, if blacks vote black just because, it is fair to say whites vote white just because. So, using your dumb logic, McCain should win because there are more white people in the U.S.

LOL.

Futhermore, if Obama was white, then what would you say.

The fact is yes some folks will vote for Obama because of his race and some folks will NOT vote for Obam because of his race. Everyone should know this. This is common sense! Stop making race a big ass deal. You want to slam Obama, come with some intelligence.

You were spot on! For the record I am a black person and will not be voting for Barack Obama! My reason is based on the issues. Most of my black friends and family disagree with most of Obama's views, yet they are voting for him anyway. Some others that posted previously, however, do make an excellent point, that blacks usually vote Democrat. Well, I'm here to tell you that I have been trying to talk sense into my black friends and family about THAT issue. The Democratic party is in direct opposition of what a majority of blacks believe. So the vote for Democrats comes from a displaced loyalty, just like the vote for Obama will come from that same displaced loyalty!

Half Black Half Mexican the next Election for sure would win. You figure the USA now has more African Americans and Mexicans than propaly whites anymore. I mean crap there is Black Enertainment TV (BET) wheres the White Entertainment TV (WET) its a bunch of crap how good the blacks and mexicans have it now, I mean they get away with racism on tv and get away with it. But if a white guy says any off color thing about blacks he gets booted from the air. Think about it.

I sob with you brother. This is the saddest day in our history. the end of the real American dream. The end of Capitalism. The end of Logic and Reason. Obama is an empty suit with a cheesy smile. Made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine three times this year. Unfulfillable promises. A hidden extreme left agenda waits. This aint theory. Just wait and you can watch it all happen now you morons. It's all good though. It's gonna hurt you as much as it's gonna hurt me. Wait til unemployment really starts skyrocketing. That'll be your first sign. I am sure you will just continue to blame Bush when this mannequin fulfills zero percent of his promises. suckers

I am African American woman, who voted for McCain. His beliefs and platform happened to be in line with what was important to me. I agree with the individual (as with my father, who is a staunch Republican) who wrote this article. I can personally say I have heard other friends and family members only voting for him because he is black with nothing substantial to back up their choice. Its pretty sad to be honest and it's dangerous. He could be the antichrist for all we know.

I laugh so hard when the black people say "Obama has us informed, we'll be ok" (when reality is, they don't even do research). It only reminds me of how stupid the racial lines are.

Ghetto people are so retarded! Its no wonder why they live in poverty. They have truely screwed the Land of Credit. I fear America will go back into its dark ages, & with the people running US Congress, I only see it getting worse. These people only get their education from rap & hip hop music (the WORST music ever created).

THANKS ALOT RACIAL VOTERS! YOU HAVEN'T ONLY SCREWED THE UNITED STATES, BUT YOU SCREWED YOURSELVES AS WELL!

Oh, UGH! Bullshit! Kiss my ass and make it lighter! That is the biggest load of shit I ever heard! You people get on my damn nerves! Well, guess what? The majority of Gays also voted for Obama. I guess they only voted for him because his gay, huh? And wait, the majority of Hispanics voted for him to! I guess they only voted for him because his Hispanic too? Oh, and so did the Jews and Muslims... As did women! So, if we use Republican logic, Obama is a Black, Gay, Jewish, Muslim, and Hispanic Woman. Or MAYBE the Blacks, gays, Jews, so forth voted for him because of his message of hope, tax cuts to middle class, ending of Iraq, not starting a new one with Iran or Syria, and the list goes on... Let's NOT forget that white people too have voted against someone because of color! Oh, yeah, what were their names? Shirley Chisholm, Al Sharpson, Alan Keyes, Jesse Jackson, and etc. Alan Keyes, coincidentally, was a late replacement candidate for U.S. Senate Illinois in 2004. But had he not been would you still have voted for him? HELL NO! And majority of African Americans/Black are democratics... DUH!

African-Americans are the most loyal block of voters the Democratic Party has, supporting it in numbers that far exceed their percentage of the U.S. electorate. Just look at the numbers. In 1996, Bill Clinton trailed Bob Dole among whites 46 to 43 percent, but got 84 percent of the African American vote and won the election handily. In 2000, Al Gore won an historic 90 percent of the African American vote, which was critical to his success in the popular vote. Given the increased polarization of the electorate and the disappearing “swing voter” in 2004, African-American voters are more important than ever.

I'm BLACK and I'm going to tell you why I voted for Mr. Obama. First of all, I'm not a damn republican, so Mccain wasn't top-notch on my list anyway. Matter-of-fact, if Clinton was still running, I still would NOT have vote for Mccain because he reminds of Bush. Plus, what her name? Plain (Sp?) would be vice president and I think she's stupid. If Mccain died we'd be in a hell hole and y'all know it! Anyway...

America has long been termed the "Land of Opportunity;" a place where every man is given the same god given rights and has an equal access to prosperity. Is this truly the case though; is the government of the United States of America, still, currently able to make this statement truthfully to every citizen in its' domain? Many say it is not; and consequently, many believe it is time for change in the Whitehouse. Our system of prioritizing major issues involving the national well-being is currently skewed, and there is need for immediate reformation in policy.

One man promising to address this problem, and bring on this change in the government, is current Democratic Presidential Nominee: Senator Barack Obama of Illinois.
Barack Hussein Obama was born August 4, 1961, and lived much of his childhood in the state of Hawaii. Being the son of a black Kenyan father and a white American mother, he has been able to live a very culturally diverse life, and experience many other things just like miniorities.

Barack Obama will reform No Child Left Behind: Obama and Biden believe teachers should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests and he will improve the assessments used to track student progress to measure readiness for college. Invest in early childhood education: The Obama-Biden comprehensive "Zero to Five" plan will provide critical support to young children and their parents. And they will help states move toward voluntary, universal pre-school. Make college affordable to all Americans: Obama and Biden will create a new American Opportunity Tax Credit worth $4,000 in exchange for community service. It will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or university and make community college tuition completely free for most students.Obama has been a leader on educational issues throughout his career. In the Illinois State Senate, Obama was a leader on early childhood education, helping create the state's Early Learning Council. In the U.S. Senate, Obama has been a leader in working to make college more affordable. His very first bill sought to increase the maximum Pell Grant award to $5,100. As a member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee, Obama helped pass legislation to achieve that goal in the recent improvements to the Higher Education Act. Obama has also introduced legislation to create Teacher Residency Programs and to increase federal support for summer learning opportunities.

Obama and Biden will invest $1 billion over five years in transitional jobs and career pathway programs that implement proven methods of helping low-income Americans succeed in the workforce. Make work pay for all Americans: Obama and Biden will increase benefits for working parents, raise the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011, and provide tax relief to low- and middle-income workers. Support rural and urban areas: Obama and Biden will invest in rural small businesses, improve rural schools, and attract more doctors to rural areas. And they will work with urban leaders to increase the supply of affordable housing and address the unique challenges of every metropolitan area. Tax Relief for Low-Income Working Families: Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years. Housing: In the Illinois State Senate, Obama championed multiple pieces of legislation to help low-income families find adequate affordable housing.

and the list goes on and on...

You people are just afraid of change! Most of the Americans who voted for Mccain were OLD HEADS anyway!
The YOUNGER people are TIRED of the this mess! Young voters are the future of this country. That is the reason they are supporting Obama. They want someone that is educated in the white house. Someone who understands the needs of the middle class. If you make $250,000 then I guess you are for Mccain, and if you are making less and voting for him your just stupid. Mccain is a lier! He used $150,000 for Palin's makeup hair and clothes(your tax money). Is that how there gonna shake up the white house. I don't call that reforming government. I call it more of the same.

And one more thing, older does not make us wiser, more educated or seasoned in areas of local and world news, the economy, finances, the environment, terrorism and war, etc. What age really does more often than not is make us more set in our ways, uncompromisingly stubborn and critical in our perspective on life, society and people in general. My work, as a 40 something, involves daily interactions with university students with from all over this country and others from all walks of life who are reminders to me that when I was their age, my world view and inner-circle comrades were very limited in our understanding of political issues and life in general. What I see in them are intelligent, mindful, motivated, fun, altruistic, creative people with a broad understanding of world views and issues than we give them credit for.

Let’s not put down the younger generation thinking we are wiser and that just because the majority of them are voting the other way means they are less intellectual, uncaring or dumb and blind to what is going on around us. It is not the number of our years that makes us wiser, it’s the ability to open our eyes and ears and God forbid, possibly listen to what they may have to teach us in these less than innocent years and times in which we live.

there i'm done; i have to go to school now. sorry for it being messy and unorganized. And pardon my french, but i'm tired of hearing this bull. it's pathetic and immature! seriously, lighten up!

Is this story for real? Polls show 92-96 percent yes...but look at these facts

88 percent of black voters voted for John Kerry - a white guy

90 percent voted for Gore - another white guy

hell 71 percent of blacks voted for FDR in 1936...

how about this fact
President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 (outlawing segregation in public places) and his eventual Republican opponent, Sen. Barry Goldwater, opposed it. Johnson got 94 percent of the black vote that year, still a record for any presidential election.

Obviously you are unaware of this, but Black Americans are not, in the strict definition of the word, 'racist'. We have never created, maintained, nor have we ever supported a system that subjugated, disenfranchised, and discriminated against white people in this country because of their race, or anywhere else. That fits the definition of a racist.

You simply cannot change the facts, nor can you change history. The fact that you single out Black people for your uninformed criticism shows how fixated you are on us. In all probabllity you do not know nor want to know anyone who is Black, because if you did your comments might, and I strongly emphasize the word MIGHT, be more informed.

Black Americans have drank the socialist-Marxist Kool-Aid just like other groups have (white, Hispanic, Asian) here in the USA, and throughout the world. What people do not understand is economics. The dominant economic theory is Keynesian and the minority economic theory is Austrian. Which is the best? In my opinion, the Austrian school of economics is the best as it protects the rule of law, individual property rights, limits the power of the state and releases the power of Capitalism for all who grasps its power.

As a matter of fact, Black Americans were the first minority to harness the power of Capitalism after the Civil War. We built universities and businesses without any government aid. We were independent, successful, wealthy, educated and hardworking. We also became a huge threat to the socialists, Marxist and other collectivists. The poison came packaged in government aid and programs which we accepted and that eventually destroyed our strong work ethic and our communities. We were returned to the plantation via government handouts and have been there ever since. Some of us have escaped but a majority of us still reside on the economic plantation begging for more government aid. T

We have forgotten the power of economic freedom that Capitalism provided us. We are a lost people drowning in the misery of collectivism, socialism, fascism and Marxism just like other peoples around the globe. Just take a look at Native American/Indian reservations throughout our nation and see what government programs and handouts have done to a once proud and mighty people. This even includes the tribes that have casinos.

you're dead on point with this article. it's a shame that all of these "black america" blacks are calling us racist because we want only want to vote for the right man for the job.

I wonder what would have happened at the voting booths if the KKK WAS OUT IN FRONT RATHER THAN THE BLACK PANTHERS.And I wonder why the black panthers never showed up at any other presidential election before.

I'll I know is far my life & finances are changing for the better. The 8 years previous consistly got worse every year. Doing the same thing over & over expecting a different is the definition of insanity. We are trying to do a different thing, possibly the results will be different. Which could be a very good thing.

This needs to be said again... Many African Americans don't understand the democratic party is their worst enemy. They perpetuate entitlement programs which make it relatively easy to get welfare, medicare, food stamps...etc. This does nothing to motivate people to work and become more educated. Republicans care just as much about minorities but prefer to focus on economic prosperity rather than entitlements. As long as Democrats can keep a large percentage of minorities dependent on the govt then they have their votes locked up. This includes whites and blacks...

One more thing. Brando is absolutely right regarding the success Black Americans had after the civil war. They made more progress and had their best success when they simply focused on working and educating themselves rahter than seeking entitlements thru the political process.

I beleive Martin Luther King would be disgusted with the moral decay which has occurred in this country since his death. A man like him should run for office and would be a much better advocate for Blacks than Barrack Obama.

Most African Americans hold up Martin Luther King as a role model but forget that he was a member of the Republican Party.

I personally would like to see Denzil Washington become more politically active. He could follow the path Ronald Reagon chose and has the potential to be a truly great man.

The original footage of the video referenced above by Jameka is here at http://www.mercurynews.com/nation-world/ci_14828591 and shows the interviewer in action. Like Stern said, he's putting McCain's talking points forth but attributing them to Obama, and the uneducated, uninformed masses never called him on it.

There should still be some kind of test to make sure voters are intelligent and informed enough to vote. Letting children play with the controls of our country's fate is inexcusable.

Since black republican candidates get a small number of black votes, the notion that blacks vote for Obama because he is black is ignorant.

Posted by: Drake on April 20, 2010 02:10 PM

The other thing you're not realizing is how many white ppl voted for mccain for the simple reason that obama is black. i have never seen so much attention put on the president EVER until now. debt? when did we find out we were in it. when it happened? no, of course not. now all of a sudden, we've tipped over. no, we've been in debt for a long time, just about a couple years after bush took over. and the war in iraq is obama's war... HA. the reason y so many black ppl voted for him is the same as y many white ppl voted for him... PALIN. a lot of ppl planned on voting for john till miss i can see russia from my house hopped on. and if you look at the age of white ppl that voted for him, and their education level, you'll see most young educated whites voted for him, opposed to older whites.

I was in a college English class during the 2008 Election and one black woman in the class bluntly admitted she voted for Obama just because he was black. She admitted that she really didn't know where he stood on most issues.

Not much of a surprise...about as ignorant as people who vote republican or democrat simply because their parents and friends do.
