Since 2004 the Barwick/Newton National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund has been helping to cover the costs of family members of fallen law enforcement officers. What the fund does is help to cover the costs so that the family members can meet with other family members who have faced the same tragedy. These families meet in Washington, DC at National Police Week and it is almost a therapy session for the children of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
Here is one testimonial:
"Thank you all very much for sending my sister and I to National Police Week this year. It was a life changing event for me. I always knew there were other children who have lost a parent in the line of duty but actually getting to talk to them and hearing their stories made it real. Since my father passed away it never really hit me that he was never coming home until I went to Washington D.C. Everyone there was so understanding. It's nice to know that you have a family of officers behind you as well. I look at life in a whole different way now. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for all you have done for my sister and me, we could not have done it without you!"
